Bollywood stars are passe. If there’s one celebrity every designer is dying to invite to their front row, it’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the charismatic daughter of UPA President Sonia Gandhi.
Though Priyanka, 39, never attends fashion weeks, she’s the most wanted guest at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, which is currently on in the Capital. “Priyanka’s style is all about intelligent fashion. We would love to have her as our front row guest. But, she is a private person and has a policy not to attend public fashion events,” says Rohit Gandhi of the designer duo Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna who are doing the Grand Finale show.
Mumbai-designer James Ferreira’s collection is inspired by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Priyanka’s grandmother. For his show on Tuesday, models walked the ramp with their hair dyed white around the crown as a tribute to her. “For me, nothing could have been better than having Priyanka as my front row guest. Of every celebrity in Delhi, she’s the one who would top my list,” he says.
A youth style icon, Priyanka’s natural flair for fashion has made her a favourite. “Internationally, fashion icons are people who don’t dress just for photo-ops, but as a lifestyle choice,” says designer Preeti S Kapoor. “Priyanka is a coveted guest because she has kept herself exclusive. She has a stellar style and could attend shows that reflect her style,” says fashion choreographer Harmeet Bajaj. “Priyanka Gandhi would give fashion the much needed degree of seriousness in the public perception,” says designer Anupama Dayal.
