Looking lovely in lace
Thought only your grandmother loved this fabric? Now, celebs also embrace the Victorian style.fashion and trends Updated: Aug 03, 2011 18:52 IST
Not in the mood to flash too much skin? Well take a leaf out of Bollywood’s wardrobe and try the lace trend that’s sweeping the red carpets. While Sushmita Sen’s delicate lace dress worn over a black slip suited the actor’s curvaceous body, Anushka Sharma went for a more contemporary look with a lace shirt, paired with a black corset pantsuit.
On the downside, Simone Singh’s lace dress would have been statement enough on its own, but paired with the thick black tights and black shoes, this look ventured into granny territory. Shibani Kashyap’s lace-maquerading-as-bandage dress too should have been left in the rejects pile.
“When I was travelling abroad, I saw a lot of people wearing lace dresses for the summer. But because fashion trends always enter India about six months after the west, it’s no surprise that celebrities are now wearing these to red carpet events,” says designer Pria Kataria Puri.
“I personally love to use lace in my collections as it’s one of those classic fabrics that never really goes out of style, but only gets reinvented each season. "Puri warns that if you’re considering wearing the fussy fabric, you should stick to a safe colour plan. “Black, white, silver and gold colours look classy and elegant, whereas the minute you try shades of red and pink, it looks like you’re walking out of the house in your lingerie.”
Stylist Ekta Rajani recommends keeping your lace look as simple as possible. “If you don’t know how to wear a trend but want to give it a shot anyway, it’s always advisable to keep it simple. You can’t really go wrong with a lace top worn over jeans.” For the more experimental, she advises, “Wear a long column skirt made in lace over a miniskirt if you’re confident of your legs and want to show a little skin.”
Shibani Kashyap isn’t doing herself any favours in this tacky black lace-over-white satin dress. Some looks should just be relegated to the bedroom. Model Vasuki Sunkavalli wears a figure-hugging black dress with just lace sleeves for impact, detailing that designer Pria Kataria Puri recommends for those who aren’t used to the fabric.
Dianna Agron’s princess gown with pink lace detailing set on grey tulle suits her complexion without overwhelming it. Sushmita Sen keeps it simple with a black lace gown worn over a fitted slip in the same colour. With this elaborate fabric, it’s better to keep accessories to a minimum. anne Hathaway chooses a black lace dress worn over royal blue satin.
