Recently, I saw photos of an audition for male models in the papers. It was for the forthcoming men’s fashion week. The photos made me wonder how our male models sport the bulky look and still do fairly well on the Indian runway.

Indian designers still prefer male models with big biceps and broad chests, but the softer look has been favoured in the West for a while. For me, the bulky look is intimidating. It makes me think that I can only wear that outfit that I liked on the runway, if I had shoulders and chest like Hulk Hogan’s.

When you check out men’s clothing in stores, you will notice that they are available in fairly large sizes. Be it shirts or jackets, most designer stores offer boxy shapes and large sizes. Very few designers make slim fits.

I think it’s about time that we started looking for newer, leaner looks in the men’s fashion segment that are representative of how normal people look. While female models somewhat fit into the scheme of things, male
models need to undergo a drastic change in terms of their physical appearance. The bulky look should be immediately replaced with smarter, leaner looks.

I think it will be much more pleasant to see boyish charm sweeping the runway. The softer look for men is what is lacking on the runway and that’s what we should look for!
