The FIFA World Cup 2018 has been a story of upsets. And it has not always been about smaller teams punching above their weight against start-studded sides. Some have hurt those individuals, who have committed it after all.

What started as a freak incident on the grandest stage of world football, when Morocco’s Aziz Bouhaddouz scored a 95th minute own goal against Iran in a Group B match on June 15, is slowly turning out to have numerous victims.

So far, including Bouhaddouz’s, five own goals have been scored in 17 matches at the 2018 edition of the World Cup. Compare this with the 2014 edition, where the same number of own goals was scored overall, i.e. in 64 games!

The highest number own goals in a single edition happened in 1998 World Cup in France. Six own goals were scored then, and it looks like that record is very likely to be broken this time around.
