Punjab beat Mizoram to clinch Junior National Football Championship

Punjab defeated Mizoram 3-0 to win the Junior National Football Championship for the BC Roy Trophy on Friday

Punjab defeated Mizoram 3-0 in the final on Friday to clinch the junior national football championship for the the BC Roy Trophy in the 51st edition of the tournament.

Till regulation time both teams were equally matched at 0-0 but just at the start of extra time Punjab took the lead courtesy Jaskaranpreet Singh’s 94th minute strike.

Punjab pressed Mizoram hard and gave them another blow when Kishore came into the act to double the lead in the 120th minute.

Punjab hit the final nail in the coffin when Jaskaranpreet scored his second goal moments from the final whistle.

Punjab have won this tournament twice by beating Mizoram in the final two times in a row.

Punjab had beaten Kerala 2-1 earlier in the semifinal of the tournament that was held in Bhilai from April 26 to May 5.

“I would like to congratulate the Punjab junior football team for winning the championship by beating Mizoram 3-0. Today’s performance shows that Punjab shall continue to play a dominant role in the future of Indian football,” Samir Thapar, president of Punjab Football Association, said.
