According to the police, Mota is an online seller and was known to the victim. The other two suspects were ostensibly working on the directions of Mota.

The police had registered a case of extortion on Wednesday against an unknown person for demanding money from a software consultant at Palam Vihar. The case was handed over to the crime unit of Sector 17 on Thursday, following which they tracked the call details and nabbed the suspects.

Anuj Gupta, a software consultant and a resident of Block C, Palam Vihar, alleged that he had received several calls from two different mobile numbers since April 14. The person calling him demanded 10 lakh, and threatened him with death if he didn’t comply.

The police said the gang members issued extortion threats at Mota’s directions, and Anuj was one of their victims.

Anuj, in his complaint to the police, said he did not recognise the caller’s voice and initially ignored the calls. But the person kept calling him over a week, following which he took it seriously and approached the police on Wednesday.

Shamsher Singh, assistant commissioner of police, said they set up technical surveillance on both numbers. “We tracked both the numbers of the suspects and followed their location, which was close to the victim’s house in Palam Vihar. The mastermind thought the victim was a rich man and could easily pay the extortion amount. However, we had also deployed people near the residence of the victim,” he said, adding that they arrested the suspects on the outskirts of Palam Vihar.

A case under Section 384 (extortion) was registered at Palam Vihar police station on Wednesday night, the police said
