In an effort to provide themselves a safe option for last mile connectivity, residents of Ardee City, sector 52 have fallen back on the humble bicycle. Residents said they are riding bicycles to not only find a solution to the problem of last mile connectivity but also move around the residential complex.
As many as 20 bicycles have been provided to residents and these are equipped with a host of features, including a locking system and GPS (Global Positioning System). The latter would enable residents to track down the cycles in the event they are stolen.
The move is part of an effort by the residents’ welfare association to enable residents adopt a healthy lifestyle. The cycles could be taken to any location without the fear of being stolen, as they are equipped with safety features, the residents said.
As the cycles are equipped with GPS, the manufacturers can track them. However, the residents need to download an application on their smartphones to ensure that the GPS works well.
The moment one manually locks the cycle, the manufacturing company gets an alert on their software about the parking location. The company then sends a representative to the said location to collect the cycle and park it in a designated stand.
RWA members said the city lacking enough last mile connectivity options, they are only dependent on cab aggregators or private vehicles for their regular commute. This initiative, they said, will set an example for other residential colonies as well.
At a time when the city’s public transport system has failed to cater to the needs of people, Ardee residents are hopeful that the bicycles will make a difference in assuring last mile connectivity.
There are four locations within the residential area, starting from RWA office, SRS Complex, Ardee Mart and E Block round about. The residents will have to shell out ₹1 for half a kilometre to avail of the bicycle service.
“The RWA invited a private company to introduce bicycles in our residential complex under it’s ‘PEDL’ initiative for ensuring last mile connectivity. We think it is a good step towards reducing carbon footprint and saving the environment. Everyone knows how NCR breathes. We strongly feel that as a residents’ welfare association, we must contribute in whatever little way we can to enable the city to breathe clean air,” Parveen Yadav, president, RWA, said.
The RWA said that the idea was to urge residents to be fit and healthy and ensure they use bicycles for short trips or till Metro stations. The RWA said it is also working to ensure safe parking of the bicycles.
“These cycles are GPS-enabled. The residents can enjoy rides at ₹1 for a 30 minutes as part of our launch offer. They can even pay through Paytm. The residents can even leave their bicycles anywhere. Besides offering a solution to the city’s last mile connectivity problem, the initiative will also go a long way towards promoting a healthy living,” Nihal Mandhotra, general secretary, RWA, said.
The RWA is also working towards providing innovative solutions to several other issues that the residents are faced with.
