A department spokesperson said that it has been observed that auto dealers were charging a much higher temporary registration fee from vehicle buyers, which was against the law. The government has already issued a prescribed fee for temporary registration of vehicles.

But dealers have been flouting the rules.

Besides, they have also not put up a notice for information of the vehicle buyers.

He further said that dealers were also indulging in malpractice while booking new vehicles. Vehicles were not being delivered to the owners on time, rather were being sold in the black market.

The official assured of strict action against such unscrupulous dealers.

However, the dealers are in denial mode. Dharamvir Singh, general manager (sales), Rana Motors, said, “We are charging R400 for temporary registration of the Swift model which includes the number plate charge. We have not received any kind of government instruction in this regard.”

According to sources, some of the auto dealers are charging Rs. 1,000-Rs. 1,500 for temporary registration but when contacted they denied the allegations.

Abhishek Sharma, director, Apra Motors, said, “It’s a fair business and everything is printed on the pamphlet which is provided to the customer. We have not received any kind of instruction from the transport commissioner till now.”
