It has not only raised health concerns, but has also become an aesthetic and olfactory nightmare for the residents, with mosquitoes, flies and pigs constantly hovering near it. The dump has grown in size over the past one year, and the situation has worsened in the past few months, say residents.

According to them, it is mainly passersby and contractors from residential colonies in the vicinity who dump waste there.

There are concerns that the monsoon season will accentuate the problem. Residents also allege that there are other places in Sector 5 that have witnessed the growth of open-air garbage dumps.

“No one can cross this area without covering their mouths. Garbage dumping in the open is also rampant near the police station,” said Govind Saluja, general secretary of the residents’ welfare association (RWAs) of
Sector 5.

Verbal and written complaints have been submitted to the authorities but to no avail, as per the residents. Another issue is that although initially, around a year back, there were dustbins in the areas, most of them have vanished over the course of the year.

Residents of Sector 5 are also concerned about those people who live near the dump in shacks. They believe they are susceptible to diseases due their close proximity to the dump.

Ecogreen officials confirmed that this location is not a designated point for dumping of waste. “It is cleared when the MCG asks Ecogreen to do so. The closure of this point was taken up by Ecogreen by constructing a transfer station, but due to public agitation, the plan was cancelled,” said Ankit Agarwal, CEO, Ecogreen Energy.

“We will get the garbage dump near the Sector 5 police station cleared,” said Yashpal Yadav, MCG commissioner.
