Several localities in Gurgaon reeled under long power outages on Tuesday. Among the areas worst-hit were Sushant Lok, Ardee City and Sector 45, as they reported 6-9 hour long outages.

The power cuts were caused by a sudden breakdown at Sector 52 power house of the Haryana Vidyut Prasaran Nigam (HVPN), which controls the transmission. The Hvpn supplies electricity to the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitaran Nigam (DHBVN) for distribution.

“We restored the transmission by 12.45 am. Since then, the supply has been fine. The breakdown happens when the demand goes up manifold in summer,” Anil Yadav, superintending engineer (SE) HVPN, said.

“We are probing the breakdown of transfer and will replace the cable if required to ensure no such fault occurs in future,” Yadav said.

The fault at the power house happened when the main transformer developed sudden fault and disrupted the transmission system. The fault caused power outages at 9.20pm and it was restored after six hours. In some areas, it took 7-8 hours for the power to be restored.

However, the residents refuted the SE’s claim that the outage lasted for three hours only.

AK Nagpal, president, Sushant Lok-1 Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA), said, “Residents started calling me up to know the reason for the outage. In Block A, power was restored at 6 am on Wednesday, while in C Block, the supply was restored at 8am. The residents repeatedly rang up the HVPN and DHBVN officials as well. We spent the night without electricity.”

The residents in Ardee City, too, complained of outages spanning hours.

“Power outage has been a big worry. Last night, there was no electricity. We have been experiencing outages for the last one month and even took out a protest a fortnight ago. The DHBVN and HVPN officials make tall claims, but they all fall flat during summer,”TN Kaul, an Ardee City resident, said.
