Taking cognizance of the repeated complaints by residents of Sector 23 A regarding the poor conditions at the Janam Divas Udhyan (park), the Huda administrator has issued directions to the horticulture wing to improve the situation within next month.

The residents said that since the contract of the existing service provided had ended last month there was no one to take care of the park and this has worsened the situation.

“This is the only large park where hundreds of people not only from Sector 23 A, but also from adjoining colonies, Kartarpuri village, and Palam Vihar comes daily for exercise and to enjoy some time in an open green space. During winter, we come here to enjoy sunshine. It is a nice park, but needs urgent effort for proper maintenance and clean-up,” said Ashok Yadav, a resident in the area and a regular at the park.

Visitors alleged that the grill at the park is broken in many places as a result of which cattle, pigs and dogs roam freely. In large parts of the park, garbage is thrown by the residents nearby as there no security guards and chowkidars to keep watch.

“Regular cleaning is not done and after since the term agreed with the contractor got over, the park has been in a state of disrepair,” Paramvir, another resident and regular visitor to the park, said.

Spread over 20 acres, the park has a large number of trees and green areas including a play area for children, but the lack of maintenance has had a telling impact on the infrastructure. High mast lights that were installed are not working. However, the residents hope that the Huda’s directive would ensure proper upkeep and restore the park to its original self.

Yashpal Yadav, Huda administrator, said directions have been issued to the horticulture department for immediate action. “I will seek a weekly report from them and ensure that the maintenance of this green space improves over time,” he said.

A member of the RWA, however, confirmed that restoration work of the park started two days ago. The maintenance staff have started to water the park again and it seems, other works are also likely to be done soon, he said.
