MCG collects Rs 50 cr tax in 2 days

With the deadline for the payment of property tax ending on Sunday, property owners on Saturday queued up at citizens’ facility centre (CFC) to deposit their dues.

The CFC, located at the corporation’s old building near the civil hospital, will have six more counters to facilitate the work on Sunday.

On Friday total collection was Rs 43 crore, while a total of Rs 5 crore was mopped up on Saturday. The corporation has managed to collect about Rs 100 crore as property tax since April this year till date.

The collection is well-short of R500 crore, the target fixed by the corporation for the current financial year.

MCG commissioner Ashok Sangwan termed it a positive sign. “We see a ray of hope as the city property owners came out to deposit the tax,” said Sangwan.

Sangwan said that the people from licensed areas are coming forward and paying the property tax.

“In the past three months the property owners from licensed areas in good number have paid the property tax,” said the MCG commissioner.

However, the Gurgaon Citizens’ Council (GCC), representing new Gurgaon, has claimed that people from licensed colonies are not paying property taxes to the MCG.

The GCC has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) and the MCG. The GCC’s stand is that the colonies must be handed over to the MCG.

“After this exercise only we will pay the property tax,” said RS Rathee, GCC president.
