They also demanded other safety measures such as traffic signals, signboards and zebra crossings.

The residents’ welfare association (RWA) members had invited PWD minister Rao Narbir Singh to their area last week and gave him a presentation on the need for safety measures on the road. The minister assured the residents that medians and speed breakers will be constructed.

“Even after the minister’s visit, no action was taken on the residents’ demands. We have written to the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and the Haryana Urban Development Authority (Huda) several times but no relief has come our way. We have even met the SHO of Sector 5 several times and requested that more policemen be deployed on the road during peak hours,” said Manu Talwar, a resident.

The police said they receive at least two to three complaints of minor accidents on the Park View Residency stretch every day.

On Monday evening, a 24-year-old MNC employee was injured after a speeding Maruti van rammed his motorbike in front of the residential complex.

Residents said in the absence of a divider, traffic from one side encroach into the space of oncoming vehicles thereby causing jams, chaos and accidents.

“The absence of a divider is a major cause of concern as this leads to accidents. Most people drive at a high speed in the wrong lane. It becomes difficult for pedestrians to cross the road,” said SC Kumar, RWA president.

During the monsoon, the situation worsens as water from nearby residential areas collects in front of the apartment complex, damaging the road.

“The road in front of our society was relaid a couple of months ago but the work was not completed. The incomplete road has become a parking lot for shared autos. Getting on and off the main road also becomes difficult due to the height difference of roads,” said Anshu Mehta, a resident.

Residents are also demanding the installation of traffic lights outside the society for pedestrian crossing and guiding the movement of vehicles from the society.

“We need speed breakers to tame the high-speed traffic and allow residents time to enter and exit the society. This will also help in avoiding accidents and will help ensure the safety of pedestrians,” said Vikas Dhull, general secretary, RWA.

“We have deployed a police van in the area during the peak hours and will that our personnel control the traffic situation,” said inspector Anil Kumar, SHO, Sector 5 police station.
