In a letter to the Haryana Development Authority (Huda) administrator Praveen Kumar, the shop owners joined by the residents’ welfare association (RWA) of Sector 31 have demanded public toilets for the market at the earliest.

“There are several defunct electric lights around the market. This makes the market an unsafe zone. The streetlights need to be repaired or replaced at the earliest,” shop owners mentioned in the letter.

“The market lacks basic amenities like public toilets and CCTV cameras. There are more than 20 poles (streetlights) which have been installed but all are defunct. The sewers overflow and the roads are broken,” said MC Yadav, a shop owner.

The shop owners purchased booths (shop-cum-residence) through an open auction nearly two decades ago.

“Two decades is a long time. The city has seen immense development in other areas but our market remains neglected. We had paid money to the Huda at the time of auction for providing all civic amenities,” said Man Singh, president, RWA.

Another issue troubling shop owners is that the Huda, three months ago, converted the market’s free parking space to paid one. This is causing loss to the shop owners and they have since then been protesting against the Huda.
