According to sources, most of the stolen motorbikes are sold in Delhi to young college students. Once bikes are stolen, its forged papers are prepared and then the bikes are sold by the dealers.

Four-wheelers, on the other hand, are sold in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and the neighbouring Nepal.

According to police officials, SUVs and Maruti Swift car are in great demand in Nepal and other places like West Bengal, Shillong, Manipur and Gangtok.

Modus operandi
Market forces determine which particular car model is more vulnerable to theft. The agents determine which particular car model is in high demand and the gangs accordingly target those vehicles.

Sources reveal that earlier Maruti Alto was the most preferred target of thieves for three months while the demand for SUVs shot up near assembly elections time.

"These thieves mostly hail from Mewat. They have a huge network which helps them to operate in different places. We have arrested more than 100 criminals from Mewat. However, criminals from Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are also getting into this illegal trade these days," deputy commissioner of police (East) Maheswar Dayal.
