Everywhere I go people are complaining of “how hot it is” or how they “hate the season.” Well, one thing is for sure, summer has officially checked into the city — bringing along its scorching temperatures. But my mantra has always been — beat the heat, before it beats you. I say, why not take advantage of the summer? Bring out your versatile shorts, flip-flops, linen shirts, lightweight dresses. There are always ways to look hot yet stay cool.

Remember, comfort is the key. Another thing to keep in mind is that what you eat can have a significant impact on how you feel. Stick to food items that replenish the lost water in your body. Eat light meals in several intervals through the day and increase fluid intake by sipping on lots of juices, coconut water and drinking yogurt. Small changes in your grocery list could go a long way in reducing the discomfort that the summer brings.

And of course, how can I forget exercise! Do not use the summer and heat as an excuse not to keep to your fitness regime. Venture out early in the morning or later in the evening or try and do light weight exercises at home, if possible. Scale back the intensity of your workout to compensate. Stay hydrated! Simple changes can go a long way in making the summer an enjoyable season, so let’s soak up the sun and get the most enviable tan.

And as Baz Luhrmann says — everybody is free (to wear sunscreen).
