Launched last week, the confection contains a cocktail of vitamins, which are said to strengthen your hair, nails and give you healthy, elastic skin.

It has ignited debate with a number of nutritionists and consumers who are skeptical of the beatifying properties and believe that its advertising strapline "Spry, pretty or clever – chew the gum that suits you" is misleading.



But the manufacturer Antula Healthcare, based in Stockholm, has defended its product on the basis that the European Food Safety Authority has approved it.



"We are not saying that you will look better but that you will maintain a healthy complexion," the Daily Mail quoted a spokeswoman as saying.



Despite controversy the gum, which contains a heady mix of Vitamin A, B1, B6, B12, C, beta carotene and selenium, has now gone on sale at pharmacies and supermarkets along with two other "flavours" called Focus and Active.
