After seemingly putting an end to rumours speculating the end of his tenure as Batman at the recent Comic Con, Ben Affleck’s future as the Dark Knight is once again under the microscope after his brother, Casey Affleck’s comments. The Oscar-winning Manchester by the Sea actor on Wednesday said that he doesn’t think Ben will return to play the iconic superhero again.
In a new interview with WEEI sports radio (via The Wrap), Casey was asked by the show’s host if he had any insight into whether or not his brother would be playing Batman in director Matt Reeves’ upcoming movie.
“I thought he was an okay Batman,” Affleck joked. “No, he was great. He was great. He’s a hero, so he had something to channel and work with there. But he’s not gonna do that movie, I don’t think.”
He did immediately add that he was making it up after the hosts said that he’d just broken huge news.
Ben Affleck was initially supposed to direct the stand-alone Batman movie, but dropped out in January because he wanted to focus on playing the character. In February, Warner Bros hired Planet of the Apes filmmaker, Matt Reeves, as his replacement. In July, Reeves said that he had thrown out Affleck’s original script for the movie and was working from scratch. And at July’s San Diego Comic Con, Affleck finally addressed rumours of him dropping out by saying that “Being Batman is the coolest f–ing part in any universe. I’m so thrilled to do it. It’s f–ing amazing (to) have this history of this great studio… They said to me, ‘We want you to be our Batman and I believe them.”
Affleck will next be seen as Batman in November’s Justice League.
