This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War

With Avengers: Infinity War in the rear view mirror after breaking numerous box office records in its opening weekend, fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have set their sights on the future. Infinity War’s tantalising ending left Marvel fans hungry for what’s in store in Avengers 4, touted as the grand conclusion to this phase of the series.

At the end of Infinity War, the supervillain Thanos comes through with his threat of ending half the universe’s population with a snap of his fingers. In doing so, he also ‘kills’ half the Avengers, leaving on the original members alive to fight another day. But they’re separated - Iron Man is on another planet, while Captain America is in Wakanda.

Marvel has also said that Avengers 4 will conclude the MCU as we know it. Marvel boss Kevin Feige has said that “there will be two distinct periods. Everything before Avengers 4 and everything after. I know it will not be in ways people are expecting.”

As per the rumours, reports, set images and interviews that we’ve read so far, here is everything we can expect from Avengers 4.

Hawkeye’s return

Since the next two Marvel movies - Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel - are set before the events of Infinity War, we’ll have to wait till next year to see Hawkeye’s long awaited return. The fact that the Russos shot a couple of scenes in Japan, and that we’ve seen set pictures of Jeremy Renner dressed as his alter-alter-ego Ronin, we can speculate that Black Widow travels to Japan to urge him to return.

Time travel

Pictures reveal Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Hulk back on the sets of the Battle of New York from the first Avengers film, but with crucial changes. The team is joined by Ant-Man, who wasn’t there the last time, and they’re all wearing old costumes - Cap is in a brighter outfit and Thor’s hair is longer, like it used to be. We can also see Loki in these pictures, back from the dead, complete with the mouth guard he wore in the first Avengers film. It is being speculated that the surviving Avengers will gain possession of the time stone and venture back into time to rewrite history, or create an alternate timeline in which the Avengers never met. The cast was also spotted with mysterious devices on their wrists, further suggesting some sort of trickery.

It will end with a gargantuan climax

According to Winter Soldier star Sebastian Stan, the cast shot a scene for Avengers 4 that included almost every character in the MCU. “There was one scene, I think, we had where everybody was there. I can’t really talk about that scene, but I knew it took them three months in planning this scene to have everyone there. You look around and you just saw everyone from Samuel L. Jackson to Michael Douglas to Michelle Pfeiffer. Everybody was there,” he said.

Avengers 4 - the title hadn’t been revealed because Feige said that it was a spoiler for the events of Infinity War - will arrive in theatres in one year, on May 3, 2019. Only two Marvel films have been confirmed post the release of Avengers 4 - Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
