Tiffany Haddish butchered almost every name she announced at the Oscar nominations. Twitter has feelings
Presenter Tiffany Haddish stumbled through almost every name she was confronted by while announcing the nominees for the 90th Academy Awards. Twitter didn’t take it lightly.
When Tiffany Haddish asked her co-presenter Andy Serkis if he wanted to go solo to announce the Best Picture nominations for the 90th Academy Awards, he said “Oh, we should both do it, what could possibly go wrong?”
Tiffany shot back, “You don’t know me at all.”
For the past 20 minutes, the star of Girls Trip - who was herself a contender for her supporting performance in the raunchy comedy - had been butchering the names of virtually every nominee she’d announced. Not just Luca Guadagnino (Luca Gedeniro), she also managed to mispronounce the names of Scott Neustadter (Scott Newstandard), and somehow, Michael H Weber (Michael H Wilber).
Particularly noteworthy was the five attempts she made at pronouncing Daniel Kaluuya’s name. Even with Serkis telling her how exactly to say it, she couldn’t do it. “Daniel Coolyay,” was attempt number one, and she ended with “Daniel Kalaluya.”
After a point, Haddish began celebrating every correctly pronounced name with a fist pump, while Serkis nervously giggled next to her.
Twitter meanwhile, was uncharacteristically supportive. Only last year, host Jimmy Kimmel’s pointing out Mahershala Ali’s name as being unusual was met with outrage online, but Haddish’s mispronunciations were seen as mostly endearing.
Here are some reactions on Twitter, where Tiffany Haddish was among the top trends immediately following the announcements.
