Officials said the crane was being used to lift material to the top of a ground plus 17-floor underconstruction building. They added that the crane fell near slums at Qureshi Nagar and three four-wheelers parked inside a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) building compound.
Railway officials said the police and MMRDA officials were involved in the rescue operation. They added railway and project authorities will coordinate the removal of the fallen crane and restoration of the damaged OHE before normal goods train operations can resume.
Officials said the accident site would be inspected and the damaged railway infrastructure assessed after the rescue operation is over. The incident raised fresh concerns over safety at major infrastructure construction sites.
