After celebrating Valentine’s Day, couple commits suicide in Assam
A young couple committed suicide by jumping in front of a speeding train early on Thursday in Assam’s Goalpara district as their families were opposed to their marriage, police said.
The victims have been identified as 26-year-old Biswajit Nath and Helen Nath, 21. The incident took place between 2:30am and 3:00am at Dudhnoi, 115km west from the state capital.
Reports said the couple, who belong to neighbouring villages and had been in a relationship, were together on Wednesday and celebrated Valentine’s Day as well as Maha Shivratri. They came from poor families.
Biswajit, who hails from Lalaburi village, was a fourth-grade employee in an office.
“Primary investigation shows the duo was in love and wanted to get married. But the families, especially Biswajit’s, were against that. This could have led them to commit suicide,” Goalpara police chief Amitabh Sinha said.
No suicide note has been found.
Police have ruled out foul play and are investigating the incident and questioning their family members.
