Himanta Sarma's 'humble request' to historians: 'India isn't just about Babar, Jahangir…'
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said it was Lachit Barphukan's bravery that ensured Assam was able to resist Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday hailed the bravery of Lachit Barphukan on his 400th birth anniversary and said reminded historians that “India isn't just the story of Aurangzeb, Babar, Jahangir or Humayun”.
Sarma said it was Lachit Barphukan's bravery that ensured Assam was able to resist Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
“I have a humble request to historians-India isn't just the story of Aurangzeb, Babar, Jahangir or Humayun. India is of Lachit Barphukan,Chhatrapati Shivaji, Guru Gobind Singh, Durgadas Rathore. We should make an effort to see in a new light. It will fulfil our dream to be Vishwa Guru,” the Assam chief minister said at a plenary session on the celebration of Lachit Barphukan's 400th birth anniversary.
Sarma said Prime Minister Narendra Modi always “inspires us to bring our history, unsung heroes to light”. “This is our humble effort to bring the proud saga of Lachit Barphukan before the country. But just the efforts of the government are not enough. There should be efforts from people, historians too,” he said.
On Thursday, the BJP leader praised Union home minister Amit Shah for bringing lasting development and peace in the Northeast region.
Shah alleged that Indian history is twisted and inaccurately written and appealed to historians and research scholars to rewrite it.
The senior BJP leader said, "I have always heard that our history is twisted and inaccurately written. It might be true, but who can now stop us from writing about our glorious history? We have to take the courage, rewrite and present our history before the world,"
Shah appealed to the historians and research scholars attending the function to get over this narrative that Indian history is twisted and inaccurately written.
Who was Lachit Barphukan?
Barphukan (November 24, 1622-April 25, 1672) was the famous General of the Royal Army of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam who defeated the Mughals and successfully halted their ever-expanding ambitions under Aurangzeb.
Barphukan inspired the Assamese soldiers in the Battle of Saraighat fought in 1671, and delivered a crushing and humiliating defeat on the Mughals.
The heroic fight of Barphukan and his army remains one of the most inspiring military feats of resistance in the history of our country, it said.
