Why Rahul Gandhi now looks like Saddam Hussein: Himanta Biswa Sarma's dig

Nov 23, 2022 12:50 PM IST

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma commented on Rahul Gandhi's new looks in the Bharat Jodo Yatra and questioned why changed his looks to resemble Saddam Hussein.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in his latest dig at Rahul Gandhi said that the Congress leader's looks have changed and he looks more like Saddam Hussein. "I told in a television interview a few days ago that there is no problem with Rahul Gandhi's new look. But if you have to change your looks, then at least make it like Vallabhbhai Patel or Jawaharlal Nehru. Even better if you look like Gandhiji, but why do you look more like Saddam Hussein now?" Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday as he addressed a campaign in Ahmedabad.

"Congress's culture is not close to India. Their practices are close to those who have not yet understood India," the Assam chief minister said.

Reacting to the Saddam Hussein remark, Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah said Himanta Biswa Sarma just wants a headline and it's possible only when he takes Rahul Gandhi's name. "Himanta Biswa Sarma can say anything. He can go to any level for power. We don't pay attention," Borah said.

Before 2014, people used to call it either Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi or Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid, Himanta Biswa said asking, "Now you think, Ram is a God and who is Babur? Why were their names taken together? But this was the practice during the Congress rule. Gujarat chief minister became the prime minister and obliterated the name of Babur," the Assam CM said.

Himanta Biswa has been campaigning in Gujarat ahead of the Assembly election. He was in Delhi too for the upcoming MCD election. Sarma referred to the recent Delhi murder pitching for a strong leader in the country like PM Modi -- for a strong law against 'love jihad' and for a uniform civil code.

"Whenever Rahul Gandhi goes nowadays, he insults Savarkar who was in the prison for 26 years. How dare you! Do you think no leader apart from Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi had any contribution? But the situation has now changed," Himanta said.

‘Aaftab meaning Sun? Not in any language': Himanta

Talking about the Aaftab-Shraddha case, Himanta Biswa said Congress leader Salman Khurshid recently said the meaning of Aaftab is the sun. "I want to tell him that Aaftab does not mean the sun not in Gujarati, not in Assamese and not even in Sanskrit. The Aaftab I am talking about is a criminal who needs to be hanged. But see the love of the Congress," Himanta said.
