Assembly Elections 2023 Highlights: PM attacks Congress' ‘laapata’ model in Madhya Pradesh

The Congress on Wednesday sought the Election Commission's immediate intervention to stop the alleged misuse of the Enforcement Directorate during assembly elections and alleged that the probe agency was acting at the behest of the central government to disturb the level-playing field.

"I come from a state which got the guidance and leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the last 20 years. Gujarat reached new heights of development under the double-engine government. Madhya Pradesh is also a state with unlimited possibilities. The benefit of a double engine government will give new heights to the development of Madhya Pradesh," Gujarat CM said while addressing an election rally in Madhya Pradesh's Jhabua district.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday targeted the ruling BJP saying the issue of religion is raked up during the elections, and urged people to avoid giving their votes on religious lines. She was addressing a public meeting in favour of Congress candidate Deepak Joshi in Khategaon of Dewas district. "People say that Madhya Pradesh is a laboratory of RSS…Whenever elections come, the issue of religion is raked up...Everybody's feelings are associated with religion irrespective of one's faiths. Will you not open your eyes when religion is being used and votes are sought?" she asked the attendees. "

Odisha Assembly Deputy Speaker Rajanikant Singh on Wednesday resigned from the post citing "personal reasons". "I am planning to concentrate on political activities as elections are round the corner," Singh said.

Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Wednesday said BJP will win with a majority in the November 25 assembly elections in Rajasthan.

"Thousands of people are joining the BJP family every day.... This indicates that the Bharatiya Janata Party is coming to power and the Congress ship is sinking,” he said.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to criticism from Congress leaders regarding his pledge to extend the free ration scheme for the underprivileged for five years. Speaking at a public gathering in Damoh town, ahead of polling in the state of Madhya Pradesh on Nov 17, Modi said, "Let them commit this sin, I will continue to do good work for the people.”

“In 2014, when we came to power, the country’s economy was at the 10th position. Gradually it moved to 9th, 8th, 7th and 6th but nobody was talking about it. When it reached the 5th position and left behind the UK, which ruled the nation for 200 years, everybody was surprised and started looking at India,” Modi added.

Speaking at a poll rally in Madhya Pradesh PM Modi took a jibe at Congress and called it out for following the ‘laapata’ model. "Congress model for Madhya Pradesh was 'laapata model'. Water supply, development, electricity, employment, everything was missing..." Modi said.

Speaking to ANI a day after the state recorded a robust voter turnout of 78.40 per cent for the single-phased assembly polls, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said, "The elections went off peacefully and hitch-free. For elections in a small state like ours, there isn't much deployment of the police and central force personnel."

"Even if a policeman stands in the corner of a polling booth, it's enough to ensure peaceful elections here. The people don't often acknowledge this," the chief of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) told ANI.

"Owing to some issues with EVMs, polling in some seats continued till 9 pm. Hence, I don't have information on the exact voting percentage. But it must have been close to 80 per cent, as per my estimate," the CM added.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said there is three factions within the Madhya Pradesh BJP, distinguishing them as Maharaj BJP (led by Jyotiraditya Scindia), Shivraj BJP (led by CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan), and the rebellious Angry BJP.

The Rajasthan election department has shared the final photo voter lists for all 200 assembly areas for the November 25 polls. Chief Electoral Officer Praveen Gupta mentioned that the state has a total of 5,29,31,152 registered voters. Out of these, 2,74,74,849 are men, and 2,53,13,458 are women.

Securing a seat-sharing deal with the BJP, the Janasena party, led by actor Pawan Kalyan, has now revealed its selection of eight candidates for the forthcoming Telangana Assembly polls on November 30.

M Umadevi, the lone woman candidate, will be contesting from Aswaraopeta (ST) constituency while Janasena Telangana in-charge Shankar Goud will be fielded in Tandur segment.

M Prem Kumar from Kukatpally, Mekala Satish Reddy (Kodad), M Ramakrishna (Khammam), L Surender Rao (Kothagudem), Lakshman Goud (Nagarkurnool) and Sampath Nayak from Wyra.

Addressing the "BC Atma Gourava Sabha" at LB Stadium, PM Modi urged the public to oust the "anti-BC government" in Telangana during the November 30 Assembly polls.

Modi asserted that the Congress and the BRS, characterized by a dynastic nature, would never elevate a Backward Classes leader to the position of Chief Minister in Telangana.

PM Modi said the Congress is essentially a "C" team of the BRS, sharing identical DNA.
