Gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on Saturday in Uttar Pradesh's Prayagraj when they were being taken for a medical check-up in police custody. The firing took place inside MLN Medical College premises. The three killers of the Ahmad brothers, who posed as journalists in the middle of a media interaction, have been detained and identified. Three people identified as Arun Maurya, Lavlesh Tiwari and Sunny Singh, were detained, but no official statement on their names was issued.

The shooting was caught on camera as media persons were following the two being escorted to the hospital by police for a medical check-up around 10pm. In the shocking videos of attackers that surfaced online, the killers can be heard shouting slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” after killing Atiq and his brother.

As the entire incident was captured on live television, it was seen that there were several cops accompanying Atiq and Ashraf. It raises questions about how planned the murder was as the shots did not miss the targets. The attackers posed as media personnel and entered the hospital premises, reports said. It is believed that they came on three bikes and did not try to escape.
