The BJP has chalked out a fresh political offensive against the TRS government in Telangana as it prepares for simultaneous Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the southern state less than a year away.

Telangana state unit president K Laxman is undertaking ‘Jana Chaitanya Yatra’ from June 23 to July 7 across the state.

It aims to mobilise public opinion against the K Chandrasekhar Rao-led government and highlight the achievements of the Narendra Modi dispensation at the Centre, Laxman told reporters here.

BJP national president Amit Shah is visiting the state on July 12 or 13 to review the party’s preparedness for the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, he said.

Out of the 17 Lok Sabha seats, the BJP’s aim is to emerge victorious in 15, including in Secunderabad, currently represented by former Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya.

Senior party leader Ram Madhav has been made in-charge of five Lok Sabha constituencies and Narendra Singh Tomar and Mangal Pandey four segments each, Laxman said.

The BJP had won just one Lok Sabha seat in Telangana in the 2014 polls and five seats in the 119-member Assembly.

The party has now set ambitious goals and the state unit is drawing inspiration from the its performance in Assam and Tripura, where it came to power with virtually no political base previously.

“People say KCR’s (K Chandrasekhar Rao) is a strong government. But he cannot be stronger than Manik Sarkar. We didn’t have even two per cent (vote share previously in Tripura) and not even a single MLA,” Laxman said.

Sarkar had headed the Left government for two decades in Tripura before the BJP’s victory.

He accused the TRS government of failing to honour election promises. “People of Telangana are angry and agitated. They want a change, and the BJP is the alternative. There is no difference between the Congress, the TDP and TRS,” the BJP leader said.

“We will fight alone. Our target is to form the government in Telangana,” Laxman said.

“Modi is our ‘Brahmastra’ and it will be used in Telangana,” he added.
