BMC election result highlights: Updates to this blog have ended. Breaching the bastion of the Thackeray family, the alliance of the BJP and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena on Friday secured a clear majority in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections by bagging 118 out of 227 seats. The BJP won 89 seats, while the Shinde-led Sena secured 29. The alliance thus crossed the halfway mark of 114 needed to control the country's richest civic body.

As of 11.15 pm, BJP had either secured victories or was ahead in 1,422 of the 2,869 seats spread across 29 municipal corporations.

The election for the BMC was held on Thursday, with a total voter turnout of 52.94%.

The results for 227 wards in the BMC were declared by the State Election Commission following the polls on Thursday, which were held after a four-year delay. Along with the BMC, 28 other municipal corporations went to the polls across Maharashtra for the civic polls. The results for the same were also declared on Friday.

The last BMC elections were held in 2017. Based on the schedule, the elections were set for 2022 but were delayed due to a series of factors. Among the key reasons for the delay in elections was due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Other reasons behind the delay were the dispute over the delimitation of BMC seats, and a legal battle over reservation for Other Backwards Classes (OBC) in local body polls.

Mumbaikars stepped out to vote for the BMC elections after nearly a gap of four years. As per the SEC, the overall voter turnout for the BMC polls stood at 52.90%, which over 54 lakh stepping out to vote.

What did exit polls say?

Ahead of the results, the exit poll projections had shown a lead for the BJP-led Mahayuti in the BMC polls. JVC exit polls had the BJP+ alliance is likely to get 138 seats, while the Shiv Sena (UBT) alliance is likely to get 59 seats.

A similar projection was made by Axis My India, which said that BJP alliance may win 131-151 seats, while the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena alliance would secure 58-68 seats.

What happened in the last BMC election result?

In 2017, the BMC elections were held in a single phase. The Shiv Sena secured a win and was voted the largest party in the elections, winning 84 seats. The BJP saw an improved performance, securing 82 seats.

Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress dropped to 31 seats, and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena dropped to 7 seats.

However, since 2017, the political landscape in Maharashtra has undergone significant changes, marked by splits within the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party.

In 2022, the Shiv Sena split into two factions, one led by Uddhav Thackeray and the other by Eknath Shinde. Meanwhile, the Nationalist Congress Party split in 2023 into two factions - one led by Ajit Pawar and the other by Sharad Pawar.

From these splits, the Shinde Sena and NCP (AP) joined the alliance led by the BJP, forming the Mahayuti alliance. Meanwhile, NCP (SP), Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress came together to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance.

BMC election result LIVE: BMC polls marred with mismatches, missing names and 'erasable' ink

BMC election result LIVE: Missing names on the electoral rolls, mismatches between polling booth details and those on the ground, and a crashed election website turned polling day into an ordeal for many voters across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) on Thursday, with several seen trudging from one booth to another in a bid to exercise their franchise.

Even election staff and party functionaries found common ground with disgruntled voters, saying the lists they received had poorly printed photographs, making voter verification difficult.

When contacted, state election commissioner Dinesh Waghmare told HT that the SEC website received 20 million hits, causing technical issues, and that rectification was underway.

BMC election result LIVE: Will there be a delay in BMC results?

BMC election result LIVE: For the 2026 election results, the State Election Commission will carry out phase-wise counting for the BMC polls, unlike in 2017, where all votes were counted simultaneously.

In a release, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said counting of votes polled in the elections on Thursday will begin at 10 am across 23 centres in the metropolis. As in past elections, the counting of all wards will not start simultaneously - instead, votes from two wards will be counted at a time. This means counting for only 46 wards will begin at 10 am, instead of all 227 wards at once.

Based on this, no trends will be available for all 227 seats as counting begins. The results will first be declared for 46 wards, and then the remainder will be counted and declared, accordingly.
