BSP leader shot dead outside Allahabad University; supporters torch bus, attack hospital

A Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader was shot dead outside a hostel near the University of Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh’s Allahabad late on Monday, police said on Tuesday.

Enraged BSP workers staged a violent protest and torched a roadways bus demanding the early arrest of the culprits. Heavy police force was rushed near the Indian Press Crossing to control the situation.

Preliminary investigations revealed Rajesh Yadav had gone to meet someone at Tara Chand Hostel with his friend Dr Mukul Singh where he had an altercation with some people.

Dr Singh told the police that some people attacked the BSP leader and opened fire at him at around 2.30am. Yadav sustained a bullet injury on his stomach and was rushed to a private hospital by Dr Singh where he died while undergoing treatment.

Allahabad superintendent of police Siddarth Shankar Meena said some empty cartridges were found in Yadav’s vehicle.

TV reports said on Tuesday two buses were set on fire and a hospital was attacked allegedly by BSP workers.

Police are investigating the incident and an FIR will be lodged after receiving a complaint, officials said.

A native of Duguna village of Bhadohi, Yadav contested the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in 2017 on a BSP ticket.

Reports said Yadav lived with his family at Haritkunj Apartment near Chandrashekhar Azad Park.
