DMK supporters took Twitter by storm late on Tuesday demanding burial space at the Marina beach for their veteran leader M Karunanidhi which had been denied by the AIADMK government of Tamil Nadu.

Hashtags Marina and Marina4Kalaignar were trending with 31,000 and 19,000 tweets as thousands asked the government to stop playing politics and give the late leader a space beside other stalwarts of the Dravidian movement.

Former Tamil Nadu chief ministers Annadurai, M G Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa have been buried at the Marina beach and have memorials to their names.

However, the Tamil Nadu government rejected DMK’s demand for burying Karunanidhi near Anna samadhi on Marina beach in Chennai, citing legal issues.

The government has offered to give a two-acre land near Gandhi Mandapam in Adayar, which already houses memorials for other former CMs, K Kamaraj and C Rajagopalachari.

Opposing the move, the DMK moved the state high court, challenging the decision.

A five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Karunanidhi died after battling age related ailments at Kauvery Hospital on Tuesday evening.

The hashtag, Karunanidhi had 110,000 tweets by 10 pm, according to Trends Map of India.
