The BJP has wrested Himachal Pradesh from the Congress, even as the saffron party’s chief ministerial face Prem Kumar Dhumal suffered a defeat in the election.

Himachal Pradesh has a history of changing the ruling formation at its helm every five years. For the Congress, Virbhadra Singh won the Arki Assembly seat while his son Vikramaditya Singh won from Shimla (rural).

The Congress and the BJP contested in all the 68 constituencies. Most exit polls had predicted the BJP’s return to power with a majority.

The state has alternately elected Congress and BJP since 1985.
