Gold and silver prices fell sharply on Thursday, ending a two-day recovery, as weakness in global markets and a stronger US dollar weighed on precious metals.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX), silver futures for March delivery plunged 10 per cent, or ₹26,850, to ₹2,42,000 per kg, after closing at ₹2,68,850 per kg in the previous session.

Gold futures for April delivery also declined, slipping 1.51 per cent or ₹2,310 to ₹1,50,736 per 10 grams, compared with Wednesday’s close of ₹1,53,046 per 10 grams.

Gold, silver rates today LIVE: Gold prices have internationally plunged by 3% on Thursday. The development comes days after prices of the precious metal saw a big crash towards the end of January.

Gold, silver rates today LIVE updates: The US dollar got a boost after the nomination of Warsh, helping it gain momentum in the markets, according to KCM chief trade analyst Tim Waterer. He said the recent sharp swings in prices have made traders more cautious about investing in gold.

On Thursday, the dollar climbed to a near two-week high, which made gold, priced in dollars, costlier for buyers using other currencies, adding pressure on prices.

Market sentiment has weakened across asset classes, including precious metals, cryptocurrencies and regional equities, OCBC strategist Christopher Wong said. He noted that losses are feeding into one another, especially in thin trading conditions, worsening the overall sell-off.

Gold, silver rates today LIVE updates: Gold and silver prices dropped sharply on Thursday amid a wider market sell-off, as a stronger dollar and signs of easing US-China trade tensions weighed on precious metals.

Spot gold fell 1.7% to $4,876.12 per ounce by 0402 GMT, slipping from a near one-week high touched earlier in the session. Meanwhile, US gold futures for April delivery declined 1.1% to $4,896.30 per ounce. Spot silver slumped 12.4%, falling to $77.09 an ounce.
