Himachal Pradesh cabinet minister Karan Singh passes away

He was ill for past few months and was admitted to AIIMS earlier this month

Himachal Pradesh cooperation and ayurveda minister Karan Singh passes away in All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), New Delhi, early morning today. He was suffering from cancer of the food pipe, family sources said. His body will be airlifted to Kullu by this afternoon.

Karan Singh, 59, was scion of Kullu royal family and younger brother of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Maheshwar Singh. He was ill for past few months and was admitted to AIIMS earlier this month.

On August 27, 2015 Karan Singh was inducted in the state cabinet as minister of ayurveda and cooperative departments.

Stint in BJP

Karan Singh was the minister of state for elementary education (independent charge) in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government between 1998 and 2003. He joined the Congress in the 2012 assembly election and was elected to Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha for third time.

He was elected to state legislative assembly in 1990 and 1998 as BJP candidate while in 2012 as Congress candidate.
