A medical examination of five children who alleged sodomy at the hands of seniors at a gurukul in Rohtak confirmed sexual assault on Monday, even as yet another victim came forward to share a similar experience of abuse.
Police have also arrested a staff member of the educational institution and detained five juveniles accused of sodomy.
The victims – all students of classes 5 and 6 – had alleged that they were being sodomised by their seniors in connivance with gurukul staffers over the last few months. The matter first came to light when one of the victims complained about the abuse to his parents, who had come visiting on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan on Sunday. Four others came up with similar stories after the boy’s mother raised an outcry in the school.
Police registered an FIR and sent the victims for a medical examination. “Sodomy was indicated in two of the five victims who were sexually assaulted recently. Further examination will be required for the other three, who may have been assaulted some time ago. Samples have been sent to the Madhuban forensic lab for confirmation,” said a surgeon who was part of the team that conducted the examination at the civil hospital.
Police identified the staff member arrested in connection with the case as Sachin, the hostel warden. He has been accused of trying to hush up the case despite several students approaching him with complaints.
Tensions rose at the gurukul after the victims’ parents gathered outside and raised slogans against its management. Things came to a head when the protesters tried to enter the school, only to be stopped by the guards.
Gurukul head Acharya Hari Dutt admitted that the matter had come to their knowledge a while ago. “We conducted an internal investigation into these incidents, but could not confirm the allegations at the time. Police are investigating the case now, and we are cooperating with them in every possible manner,” he said.
