Shoaib Hussain could have been arrested on Wednesday morning along with two of his associates had he not stayed back in the hotel room in Old Delhi.
According to the police, Shoaib came to Delhi from Rajasthan with Maulana Ramzan Khan and Subhash Jangir, for their monthly meeting with diplomat Mehmood Akhtar and were supposed to hand over secret documents related to border postings, troop movement maps and list of BSF personnel, in Rajasthan and Gujrat, to him. Hussain, however, chose not to come for the meeting, supposedly sensing that there may be a raid.
The trio reportedly checked into a hotel in Old Delhi on October 25. The next morning Khan and Jangir got ready for the meeting, but Shoaib refused to go with them. He told the duo that he was tired and wated to rest. The police suspects that he was asked to stay back in the hotel by an operative.
Shoaib told the police that when his associates did not return to the hotel, he called them. When their phones were found to be switched off, he sensed that they may have landed in trouble and he packed his bags and left for Rajasthan.
Police said that they got leads about Shoaib leaving for Rajasthan and they send a team to arrest him. “He was nabbed in Jodhpur and brought to Delhi on Thursday night. We had been tracking his movements for the past few months. We are now questioning him on his links with other spies in other parts of the country,” a police officer said.
