Suspected smuggler hurt in gunfight with police in Haryana’s Nuh, cattle rescued

A suspected cattle smuggler was caught after getting injured in an exchange of fire with police on the Delhi-Mumbai expressway in Haryana’s Nuh early Tuesday.

People aware of the matter said a police patrol tried to stop two suspects in a pickup van at a checkpoint on the expressway on an intelligence input of cattle smuggling to Rajasthan for slaughter. The two rammed the barricades and fled, prompting a chase.

Krishan Kumar, Nuh police’s public relations officer, said the suspects were intercepted. “Two of the suspects in the pickup van fled after abandoning the vehicle. They opened fire, triggering a retaliation in which one of the suspects was injured after getting shot in the leg,” he said.

Police said he was overpowered and hospitalised, while his associate managed to flee. Police said five cattle that were being illegally transported were seized and rescued.
