Xi said that he attaches great importance to China-India relations. The Chinese president also added he was ready to work with Droupadi Murmu to enhance political mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation, handle differences properly and also push bilateral ties forward on the right track. Xi also highlighted that China and India are important neighbours for each other and a stable relationship is in line with the fundamental interests of both the countries and their people, the report added.

The congratulatory message to Murmu is believed to be the Chinese President's first communication with India in nearly a year, news agency PTI reported. On April 30, 2021, when India saw the deadly second wave of the Covid pandemic, Xi Jinping wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, offering support to strengthen anti-pandemic cooperation with India.

The relations between India and China have been strained following the border skirmishes, which began in 2020.

Sixteen rounds of talks have been held between India and China so far. The 16th round, which was held on July 17, failed to see any major breakthrough but the two countries said in a joint statement that they will stay in close contact and maintain dialogue through military and diplomatic channels for a mutually acceptable resolution of outstanding problems along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
