Eleven more persons died of sunstroke in Andhra Pradesh, taking the heatwave toll in the state to 1412, even as pre-monsoon showers brought a little respite from the scorching heat to some areas.
The Relief Commissionerate said here that the eleven sunstroke deaths were reported from Khammam district.
As per the Meteorological office, the monsoon is expected to arrive in the state on June 15. However, some parts of the state, which had been reeling under intense heat for four weeks, experienced some relief on account of the pre-monsson showers.
The worst-affected districts are West and East Godavari districts where 261 and 199 sunstroke deaths respectively were reported followed by Nalgonda in the drought-prone Telangana region which reported 192 deaths and Guntur district 184.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, addressing addressing the District Collectors' conference, which ended here today, advised the district administration to take up the relief works and provide safe drinking water in rural areas.
Last week, the State Government had set up a task force comprising environmentalists, engineers and other experts to advise government steps to meet the situation arising out of the unprecendented heatwave.
