Three persons snatch away nearly Rs 4.5 lakh by posing as police personnel.

Three persons have been arrested on charges of posing as policemen to snatch away nearly Rs 4.5 lakh from a suspected hawala operator, police said in Thanjavur on Thursday.

Ali (35), Vivek (24) and Anand (28) were caught by local people at Pattukottai and handed over to police on Wednesday night.

According to police, R Hakkim was returning home with a bag containing Rs 4.46 lakh, after delivering hawala money of Rs 5000 to one Mohideen in a lodge at Pattukottai, when the trio intercepted him claiming that they were police personnel.

They took away the bag after assaulting him. When Hakkim raised an alarm, local people followed and captured the three.

While Vivek and Anand were residents of Chennai, Ali hails from Thiruchendur, police added.
