The elephants, believed to be mother and eight-year-old calf, got separated from their herd and entered Mysore, from a forest near T Narasipur, 25 km north of Mysore, officials said.
The calf attacked after people threw stones at it. It trampled Renuka Prasad (55), a security guard at a shopping complex. The elephants were caught after a six-hour long operation.
Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa has announced a compensation of R5 lakh to Prasad’s family and R1 lakh each to the injured.
India has 25,000-28,000 elephants, about 20% more than in 2006. With this increase, about 70% of elephant corridors —linking one forest range to another — have shrunk. htc
