At least 40 people were killed and 65 others wounded on Tuesday when a car bomb exploded, killing a group of Iraqi day labourers gathered in the centre of the Iraqi Shiite shrine city of Kufa, a security source said.

Several witnesses said the car bomb blew up in the middle of the crowd across the street from the city's grand mosque.
Al-Furat Al-Awsat hospital said it had received 27 bodies and dozens of wounded.
On July 6, a bomb attack against a bus for Iranian pilgrims outside the Maytham al-Tammar shrine next to the same mosque killed 12 people and wounded dozens, most of them Iranian nationals.
