Police began investigations, but failed to find any clue about the unclaimed cartons.

Sources said a sweeper of the Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation was at work when his broom struck two boxes. He took them out of the drain and opened them to find cartons inside. Sensing foul play, he informed the police personnel deployed at Ghosh Company crossing. Subsequently, the senior officials were informed.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and brought the boxes to the Kotwali premises. On opening the cartons, they found wet, but live cartridges. The recovery of the 12 bore cartridges put police officials in a tight spot.

Sources said all these cartridges are manufactured by an ordnance factory. A weekly supplement of a Hindi daily was also found in the box. The names Mubarak, Sanjida and Abida were written on the supplement. Police are investigating the connection of the names with the cartridges. Following the recovery, police conducted surprise checks at all 12 licensed arms shops, but found no wrongdoing.

Now, police suspect there may be a major conspiracy behind the entire affair.
