Addressing media persons on Wednesday, Dr SP Singh, Director and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, MLN Medical College and Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, MD eye Hospital, Allahabad said that a pre-conference course on SICS/Phacoemulsification/Oculoplasty has also been planned at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology, MD Eye Hospital, on November 24, 2006 at 9.30 am.
He said, "Cataract still remains the major cause of blindness in developing countries. In India 20.7 million people are blind and nearly 80 per cent of the blindness is avoidable or treatable. Cataract accounts for about 9.5 million blinds in India."
Dr Singh said that about 3 million cataract surgeries are performed in the country per year but about 3.8 million new cases are also added annually. "As a result 0.8 million new cases are added to our backlog ie 9.5 million existing cases and it further swells. So we need to gear up our services but paying every attention to qualitative outcome so that we can achieve our objective of removing cataract related blindness," he added.
In this conference eminent experts of the ophthalmology field will discuss recent advances in technology in surgical management of cataract surgery ie SICS (manual phaco), Phacoemulsification, Ptosis, Epicanthus etc. These surgeries will be observed by delegate ophthalmologists on a big screen in auditorium.
Dr SP Singh, who is also the organising secretary, emphasized that the main conference ie 41st Annual conference of UP State Ophthalmological Society will be held on November 25, 2006. Eminent Ophthalmologist Dr Daljit Singh will be the chief guest of the conference and will inaugurate the conference at 9 am in the auditorium of MLN Medical College.
Eminent experts expected to participate in the conference from Delhi include Prof HK Tewari, Prof RV Azad, Dr Harbansh Lal, Dr AK Grover, Dr Dinesh Talwar, Dr Lalit Verma, Prof Kamlesh and from Mumbai Prof TP Lahane and Dr Ragini.
