Dentist Nupur Talwar, the mother of murdered teenager Aarushi Talwar, will spend at least a night at Dasna district jail in Ghaziabad after a sessions court rejected her plea for interim bail on Monday and told her to appear before it on Tuesday for a regular bail hearing.
Nupur and her husband Rajesh, also a dentist, are facing trial in the murder of their 14-year-old daughter and domestic help in Noida four years ago.
Nupur surrendered before the CBI’s special judicial magistrate (SJM) on Monday morning after the Supreme Court directed her three days ago to appear before the SJM’s court on April 30.
On Monday, the SJM rejected Nupur’s bail as it is not empowered to grant bail in murder cases. Her lawyers then moved the sessions court for interim bail, which was also rejected and Nupur was taken to Dasna jail at 4.45pm under heavy security.
On February 9, 2011, the SJM took cognisance of the CBI's closure report in the Aarushi-Hemraj case and issued summons to the Talwars to appear in court, making them accused on charges of murder, destruction of evidence, conspiracy and a common intention to commit the crime.
While Rajesh appeared in court on March 14, Nupur skipped hearings, citing legal issues and her pending review petition at the Supreme Court. With Nupur’s appearance on Monday on the orders of the Supreme Court, the trial is likely to begin soon.
