Activists demand lake restoration
THE AGITATION against levelling the natural lake Sumer Sagar in the heart of the city intensified on Tuesday. Gorakhnath Purvanchal Vikas Manch activists took out a procession and staged a dharna at the municipal corporation office. They demanded restoration of lake and removal of encroachments by the land mafia. Thousands of residents of Sumer Sagar and adjacent localities blocked movement of traffic near Sumer Sagar for the second consecutive day to express their anger.

They demanded restoration of lake and removal of encroachments by the land mafia.
Thousands of residents of Sumer Sagar and adjacent localities blocked movement of traffic near Sumer Sagar for the second consecutive day to express their anger. They issued an ultimatum to the district administration to remove encroachments within 24 hours. They handed over a memorandum to the ADM City and blamed administration for having an understanding with the land mafia and encroachers.
Drainage from several localities empties into the lake. Blocking this drainage has created waterlogging in low-lying areas. Dirty water has entered into various houses and people are facing hardship, but the administration has not yet paid attention to their grievances.
On Monday, residents of the area took out a procession and blocked traffic near Dharmshala Bazaar to register their protest against dumping garbage at historic lake for levelling it. According to sources, land mafia continued dumping garbage in the lake on Monday night. This caused resentment among residents.
Activists of the Goraknath Purvanchal Vikas Manch condemned the apathetic attitude of the municipal corporation and said they would intensify their agitation if encroachments were not removed. Divisional president of the Manch Vinay Singh, secretary Virendra Sharma, Vishnu Shanker Srivastava and others said they would launch an agitation.
