A 25-year-old from Kalyan was picked up by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday morning in connection with four Kalyan youngsters, who left the country to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an extremist group in Iraq.
Rahim Shaikh (name changed) is the first person to be interrogated for more than 36 hours after the arrest of Areeb Majeed by the NIA last week. It is not known whether Majeed revealed his name in his statement or the officials called him for assistance in the case.
It is believed that Shaikh and Rohan Khan (name changed), both from Kalyan, dropped their plans to join the others because of personal reasons. The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), during the investigations, have interrogated many from Kalyan and Navi Mumbai, including Shaikh and Khan.
“Shaikh and Khan have been identified as the fifth and sixth persons, who were to join the four others, including Majeed. We are interrogating him for details as he too would have attended some sessions and would know who talked them into this. We are trying to cross check if Shaikh’s version matches Majeed’s statement, which said the plan of going to Iraq was made for six months. At the same time, we are trying to ascertain why Shaikh and Khan refused to follow the four others,” NIA sources said.
After Majeed, Aman Tandel, Fahad Shaikh and Shaheem Tanki went missing in the last week of May, the Maharashtra ATS officials picked Shaikh and Khan several times for questioning and are believed to have gathered lot of information from them regarding the case.
“A group of college students from Navi Mumbai were interested in the day-to-day situation in Iraq and Syria. They also connected through social networking sites regarding the same,” said an official from ATS.
According to family sources, Shaikh was picked by an NIA officer from his Kalyan residence. His family was given intimation under section 160 of the Code of Criminal Procedure on Saturday. It has been more than 36 hours that he is being interrogated and the questioning was on even while going to press. Shaikh has an engineering degree and he runs his father’s hotel in Kalyan (West).
