THE DOWNPOUR which lashed the city at noon on Wednesday caused so much waterlogging that many areas of the city were converted into virtual islands and vehicular traffic was stranded for a long time.
The worst water logging was witnessed on VIP Road, Motijheel crossing, New Civil Lines, Sharda Nagar, Kidwai Nagar and several other new and old localities. In some areas where sewer drain cleaning was in progress, local residents and commuters faced great trouble. The silt dumped near the drains not only spread on the road but slipped into the drain again, threatening the choking of the cleaned part of the drain.
The officials supervising the cleaning operations told Hindustan Times that as a rule, first the silt was piled up and when a truck-load was collected, it was lifted and thrown on the outskirts of the city. Ordinarily the silt thus piled up never caused trouble as the cleaning was completed before the start of the rains. The problem cropped up this time as the cleaning operation began a little late.
On Nai Sarak, due to the rain, all the un-removed garbage on both sides of the road leading to central station, spread on the road and created trouble for commuters.Similarly, the roads and the drains in highly congested localities overflowed with the rain water mixingwith the sewer drain water and polluting the environment in these localities.
At many places, the local residents cleaned the drains and opened the sewers themselves for draining out the water in the lanes. Due to water logging in Kaushalpuri and on VIP road, movement of vehicles became impossible.
