Agni pariksha

Failures of our Agni-III and Insat-4C are setbacks in spite of brave words. They will go through nothing short of an agni pariksha during the failure analysis.

Failures of our Agni-III and Insat-4C are setbacks in spite of brave words. They will go through nothing short of an agni pariksha during the failure analysis. Irrespective of the causes of the failures, it is time to pool all our aerospace knowledge and resources. The ballistic missile programme can be handled just as well by the space agency. Also, knowledge of experts in aerospace technologies can be pooled for national advantage.

Change the laws

Apropos of the report Why politicos can’t beat pros (July 11), it is shameful that exigencies of coalition politics are forcing a government headed by a scientist President and an apolitical Prime Minister to allow a minister to disrupt the functioning of AIIMS. Why can’t we revise the statutes of AIIMS to delink it from politicians and politicking?

Security lapse

Apropos of the editorial Metropolitan makeover (July 11), the vandalism by Shiv Sainiks is deplorable. Though the Shiv Sena did not call for a bandh, Sainiks forced shopkeepers to down shutters at a time when many parts of the state are limping back to normalcy after the monsoon fury. When the police are busy saving lives, how can political parties expect them to protect the statues of dead leaders?

Lifeline of city

The report Metro is a burden on city (June 7), cites several ‘experts’ to the effect that Delhi Metro is financially unviable and destroying our heritage. Ask the thousands of Metro travellers in areas like Dwarka and Rohini and you will know how wrong the report is.

It is one of the few Metros of the world making a profit. It has reduced traffic jams and pollution and is saving fuel worth lakhs. It does not matter to these ‘experts’ who use private vehicles even when the city has a reliable means of public transport. The reality is that the Delhi Metro is the lifeline of the capital.
