With the advent of technology, mobile phones have become an integral part of everyday lives. There is hardly anyone we know that does not use a mobile phone. However, some people have raised concerns over impact of radiation emerging from mobile communication systems with excessive usage of mobile phones. This has resulted in misunderstanding and misinformation on the issue of safety and radiation of telecommunication devices.

The issue of radiation is abstract and misunderstood by people at large. It is important to understand that since mobile phones and its base station are in a two-way radio, they produce radiofrequency (RF) radiation as a means of communicating. At this juncture it is important to note that RF radiations emitted by Mobile Communication systems lie in the non-ionizing part of the electromagnetic spectrum and thus do not have enough energy to cause any genetic damage, hence cannot contribute towards the negative health hazards perceived with radiation from mobile communications devices.

There has been publicity, speculation and concern over claims of possible health effects due to RF radiation from base stations and mobile phones which have prompted many research organisations to investigate the potential health effects from the use of mobile phones.

It is only natural for consumers to worry whenever there is a perceived health scare coupled with tremendous amount of misinformation on this issue which has further added to the confusion and uncertainty. To date, there is no scientific evidence to prove that the mobile phone system can lead to any ill effects on health. The industry must conjoint their efforts to educate the masses and remove any misgivings. As much as the allegations continue to exist over usage of mobile phone and associated devices, the benefits thereof continue to enrich our lives.
