Sample this. Fifteen years ago your most treasured job options were engineering, medicine, civil services, teaching, armed forces, or well, any other government job. But today, you have an array of options other than the ones mentioned above to choose from. True, the number of people opting for the former still largely outnumber the latter, the community is growing. These are the unconventional jobs options that the greater awareness and the opening up of the Indian economy has resulted in.

We look at some such careers at hand.

Sports
Sports today is a favoured career option for many, particularly the upwardly mobile middle class. Greater interest in sports in public, corporate funding and laurels won internationally have helped sports being considered as a serious career option.

Sports management is a relatively new field in India. Though there is no dearth of talent, India is still way behind. Most of the government controlled sports authorities lack the professionalism required to groom a world-class sportsperson. But post liberalisation, sports as a whole, has undergone change. Greater acceptance in public at large has only raised its stocks higher. Many cricketing stars are really big. Apart from being stars in themselves, they are the face of many brands today. Their careers have to be managed - which league to play in, how to manage money, how to tackle media, where and how to train and many such issues.

Other areas that one could pursue in the sporting/health arena are weight reduction specialist, strength trainer, aerobic instructor, athletic trainer and physical education instructor.

What is expected of you
It is a physically demanding job. You must have a competitive spirit and have to be healthy. You need to have organising ability, leadership qualities, must have stamina, resilience, self-discipline and must be physically and mentally tough.

Courses
Many Indian universities offer Bachelor in Physical Education (BPEd) and Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Management (PGDSM) in physical education. You could train to be coach or a lecturer. But most courses are dated as far as syballus is concerned. Doing a course at a reputed American or Australian university would do wonders.
